2017 Gildan New Mexico Bowl – Marshall 31, Colorado State 28

Saturday’s Gildan New Mexico Bowl attendance was 26,087.

The scoreless first quarter was just the second in Gildan New Mexico Bowl history. The only other game with a 0-0 first quarter was the inaugural game in 2006 between San Jose State and New Mexico.

Tyre Brady’s 76-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter tied the third-longest in Gildan New Mexico Bowl history, and Chase Litton tied for third-longest pass on the same play.

Tyre Brady’s 165 receiving yards and 27.5 yards per catch are third-most in Gildan New Mexico Bowl history.

Marshall running back Tyler King’s 90-yard touchdown run was a new long in Gildan New Mexico Bowl history, breaking a previous record 77-yard run set by Colorado State’s Gartrell Johnson in 2008.

Colorado State and Marshall combined for 35 points in the second quarter to tie the most in one quarter at the Gildan New Mexico Bowl, and Marshall’s 21 points were the most by a single team in one quarter.

Saturday marked the first time in the last six years that the team that scored first won the game.

Marshall becomes the eighth team in Gildan New Mexico Bowl history to win the game after leading at the half.

The 3:46 length of game was the second longest behind the record 4:06 set by Washington State and Colorado State in 2013.

Marshall’s win marks the first Gildan New Mexico Bowl victory for Conference USA after losing in 2010, 2014 and 2016.

Marshall’s 12 tackles for loss broke the previous record of nine held by BYU (2010) and Fresno State (2009), and the 40 yards recorded are third most in Gildan New Mexico Bowl history.

Channing Hames recorded 2.5 tackles for loss, tying the second most in Gildan New Mexico Bowl history.

Marshall’s 11 penalties and 107 penalty yards are the most in Gildan New Mexico Bowl history, breaking previous records of 10 penalties and 103 penalty yards by Washington State and New Mexico respectively.

Chris Jackson’s two breakups are tied for the most by one player.

Marshall recorded five sacks to tie the Gildan New Mexico Bowl record set by Colorado State in 2013, and the total loss of 31 yards is the third most.

Marshall’s 7.2 average yards per rush are second most behind CSU’s 9.3 average yards per rush in 2008.

Marshall now holds the Gildan New Mexico Bowl record for touchbacks with six, breaking the previous record of five set by Arizona in 2012.

CSU is now 2-1 in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl, suffering its first loss after winning the game in 2008 and 2013.

CSU won the coin toss and deferred.

Ryan Stonehouse’s eight punts tied for second most punts in Gildan New Mexico Bowl history, and his 334 yards are the third most.

CSU recorded four punts inside the 20-yard line, breaking the previous record of two on seven occurrences.

CSU’s six fair catches forced breaks the Gildan New Mexico Bowl record of four set by New Mexico in 2015.

Nick Stevens’ 52 passing attempts are second all-time behind Washington State’s Connor Halliday in 2013.

CSU had five first-down penalties, ahead of the previous record three set by Temple in 2011.

CSU tied for third all-time with nine completed third-down conversions.

 

INDIVIDUAL

The Offensive MVP was Marshall wide receiver Tyre Brady. Brady led the Thundering Herd with 165 receiving yards and one touchdown.

The Defensive MVP was Marshall defensive tackle Channing Hames. Hames led the Thundering Herd with 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
